Check statement balances and bookkeeping differences

Put statement rows beside the corresponding signed book amounts. The workbook calculates running balances and flags missing entries, period mismatches and amount differences for you to review.

No signup, macros or external data connections. English workbook with 100 transaction rows and editable currency and period inputs.

Use it with your statement

  1. Set the currency, period and bank/book opening balances on Reconciliation. Enter the bank’s closing balance independently from the statement.
  2. Replace the blue bank inputs A:F on Transactions with your reviewed rows. Use spreadsheet dates and numeric amounts, with zero for an unused debit or credit. Keep statement order.
  3. Enter each corresponding book amount in column H. Receipts are positive and payments negative. Leave a missing amount blank; zero is a real entry.
  4. Review the row messages and summary differences against both source records. Keep formulas in G, I and J intact. Clear unused example inputs.

Try the fictional example

The bank rows come from the actual extraction in our worked example. The bookkeeping entries are invented for this exercise: the bank fee is blank and rent is entered as −590.00 instead of −600.00.

The workbook starts with two rows needing review and a GBP −15.00 bank-versus-book difference. Entering −5.00 for the fee and −600.00 for rent makes the example balance. In real work, change entries only after checking the underlying records.

Scope and checks

Use one account, currency and period per workbook. This is a manual comparison aid. It does not automatically match transactions, handle split entries, post adjustments or connect to bank or accounting accounts. Use a fresh copy for another period or more than 100 rows.

Formula checks help expose differences; they cannot prove that your source records are complete. Offsetting mistakes can still balance. Review outstanding payments, receipts and timing differences separately. The download is an XLSX workbook; check formulas and date interpretation if you import it into another spreadsheet application.
